Ipe Decks on Three Levels
Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie · 2026 · Ipe
A building from the 2000s in Rosemont. The original metal deck had reached the end of its useful life: visible corrosion, an uncomfortable surface and a cold feel. The new owner wanted something different—something durable, pleasant to live with and worthy of a well-maintained building. They chose ipe.
Why choose ipe for an outdoor deck
Ipe is one of the densest and most durable exotic woods for outdoor decks: it does not rot or warp, and it withstands Montreal winters without intensive treatment. Under bare feet, it feels smooth and warm—nothing like metal or composite.
It is also a sound-absorbing wood. An ipe deck is quiet, without the resonance of an aluminum structure.
The trade-off is that ipe is demanding to work with. Its hardness wears down blades quickly and requires suitable tools. It is an unforgiving wood, which also makes it a good indicator of the care taken during installation.
The De Breuck approach
The client already had an idea for the plan. We reviewed the architect’s drawings, met on site before the work began and proposed integrating planter boxes to add greenery without reducing the usable surface—an idea the architect approved.
The objective was clear: to make these custom decks in Montreal genuinely usable, whether for working outdoors, entertaining or enjoying a quiet corner in the city.
The construction site
Rosemont is a dense urban environment. Access was limited, neighbours were close and logistics had to be managed across three levels: ground floor, first floor and second floor. This type of wood-deck project in Montreal requires rigorous organization and good coordination with residents. Each deck had to function independently while remaining part of a coherent whole.
Quality is not limited to the visible installation of the boards: it also depends on preparation, structure, wood ventilation, water management and precise cuts. These points were defined with the client in advance.
Result
A series of understated, solid and visually consistent ipe decks, designed for daily use as well as longevity. The client now has outdoor spaces that are genuinely used—quiet, comfortable and built to last.
