An old house that had been purchased and renovated. The new owners wanted to replace the original joinery with solid-wood interior shutters and doors, fitted to the existing openings and consistent with the rest of the renovation.
The project
Fabricate and install custom oak interior shutters and doors. The client wanted a warm, durable wood that would fit into a renovated interior without trying to imitate the past or appearing overly contemporary.
Why oak
Oak is stable, dense and well suited to moving interior elements such as shutters and doors. It takes an oil finish well, ages gracefully and works with a wide range of styles. It is a solid choice for a renovation designed to last.
Execution
In an old house, openings are rarely perfectly plumb. Each shutter and door was custom-made and adjusted on site to fit the existing conditions. Floating panels allow the wood to move without cracking. The oil finish was applied in the workshop before installation.
